Getting $$ instead of unuseful gifts - better, faster and more engaging than a gift card

I'm currently developing a website that reworks how people give gifts to each other. What we're aiming for is the idea that so much money gets wasted every year on gifts people know won't be appreciated. If you had any feedback for the website, I'd love to hear it, or even just give us your thoughts on this method of gift-giving.

How can we seem more like a wedding registry for general use, and less like people abusing crowdfunding websites?
